RBI Baseball - a fun, well balanced, time-tested NES classic July 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Although its graphics are archaic by today's standards, RBI Baseball for the original NES continues to provide me and my friends countless hours of entertainment and competitive action. The game has several modes of play to choose from, including watch mode. And while playing against the computer quickly becomes tiresome, the game's two-player mode is what gives it its alluring feel and makes it a classic. Thanks to a few subtle changes from real baseball (such as the 16-man rosters that limit each team to 4 pitchers and 4 position players off the bench), the two-player game has a great deal of strategy to it. In addition, each player is highly individualized and has his own feel. The small crew of Japanese game developers who programmed RBI Baseball back in the late 1980s had remarkable foresight and true understanding of baseball as they were able to create a simple game that has withstood the test of time.
The game showcases heavy hitters like Reggie Jackson, Will Clark, and Andre Dawson as well as aces Nolan Ryan, Fernando Valenzuela, and Mike Krukow. There are also players like Jose Canseco and Roger Clemens who display superhuman batting and pitching ability, even in the world of RBI Baseball. The game-play is surprisingly accurate and reflects the true nature of baseball in that almost any player can affect the outcome of the game. With a skilled gamer, a nobody like Bruce Hurst can have the same type of impact as a Roger Clemens. The quirks to this game are like no other - these are things like tandem fielding, cocked bats, and the catch and pose, to name a few. No game is perfect, but the glitches in RBI Baseball are such fan favorites, that there is speculation to whether they were intentionally injected into the game. Such glitches include bunting an inside the park homerun, having a fielder run into the stands, and snowfall!
5 stars to the greatest two-player sports game of the NES era (and perhaps ever!).
The first great baseball game for the Nintendo NES. July 30, 2006 This wasn't the first baseball game to come out for the NES, and some of the later games featured better graphics and allowed player development, but when this game came out in 1988, it immediately became one of the best games available for the NES. You can take control of one of the 8 playoff contender teams from 1986 or 1987, or one of the 1987 All-Star teams, and you can play a computer-controlled opponent, play another human opponent, or just watch the action.
Although it was eclipsed by SNK's Baseball Stars, which was released the next year, RBI Baseball retains its charm and it still is arguably the best choice if you want a quick pick-up game or two. If you want to see how far baseball video games had progressed by 1988, this is a great pick-up. No Nintendo NES collection is complete without RBI Baseball.
