The Pinker and Caldwell segments March 25, 2008
Charlie Rose has provided a real service in his efforts to keep the American public up-to-date on what is really happening in Iraq, and what is going on with the American military. The Caldwell interview is another of the updates. The Pinker interview is on his new work on the way Language works. I was a bit surprised by the interview. Pinker is a person of tremendous reputation. But the interview was far less interesting than I thought it would be. He seemed uptight a bit, and a bit unconvinced of what he had to say. I also found the particular insights he brought about Language to be less than earth- shaking. This was not an interview which felt as Rose's often do, as real intellectual exploration and adventure.
